Design Strategy
Form for Cooling
The shape and volume of buildings should be compact and elongated along the east-west axis to reduce heat gain in the summer while maximizing solar exposure in the winter. Roofs, walls, windows, and outdoor spaces must be shaded and it is typically easier to shade south and north walls. Openings should be placed according to the prevailing winds to allow cross-ventilation.
